The HIDDEN CURRICULUM APPROACH
We at Missing Links view this area to be fundamental in the development of a child’s understanding and awareness of his/her place in the world- especially the social aspect of it.
Because of the relevance and importance of each of Social, Hidden Curriculum and Executive Functioning, they are included each week as part of our overall planning.
Hidden Curriculum (HC) includes the concepts behind understanding unstated rules in Social Situations. How often do we use the term Social Skills and think about all of the intricate aspects of such an idea? HC includes the specifics of anything from proper eye contact in a washroom (public) to leaving a birthday party.
Often, we as educators approach an idea as a whole- being part of a group, using manners, friend circles, etc. with the best of intentions while neglecting an intricate part which, if misinterpreted by our students and children, might change an entire experience for them. This used to be a concept taught for a portion of the sessions here.
