Celebrating 30 Years of Black History Month in Canada: Honouring Black Brilliance in the Autism Community

By: Michael Daniels

For 22 years, Missing Links Autism has been dedicated to a single, powerful mission: building an inclusive community where every individual and family is seen, heard, and valued. This foundational commitment guides us as we mark a significant national milestone, the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada.

This year’s theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” resonates deeply with our work. It is a call to recognize the vast tapestry of contributions that Black Canadians have woven into our national fabric. At Missing Links, we extend this honour into the heart of the autism community.

We celebrate the profound contributions, resilience, and visionary spirit of Black Autistic individuals, Black families navigating autism, and Black advocates and professionals. Your stories are integral to our collective history. From the nation-builders who have tirelessly advocated for equity and understanding in support systems to today’s innovators challenging stereotypes and creating new pathways, your brilliance is transformative.

The intersection of Black identity and autism brings unique perspectives, strengths, and cultural richness that shape a more vibrant and inclusive world for everyone. It reminds us that true inclusion means actively listening to and uplifting diverse voices within our community. The resilience demonstrated across generations fuels progress and lights the way for tomorrow’s visionaries.

As we reflect on these 30 years of official celebration and recognition, let us reaffirm our commitment to learning. Let us intentionally uplift the narratives and achievements of Black and Autistic individuals. Let us celebrate together, not just this month, but throughout the year.

Let’s continue learning, uplifting, and celebrating together.
